Departmental Chair

Chair Letter of Recommendation

1) Preliminary letter from departmental chair:

  • Must indicate recommendation and specify title and track.

*Formal letter to be sent after review of 1st five referee letters received by Office of Faculty Records.
* Preliminary letter is not required for new appointments

2) Formal letter from departmental chair:

  • For promotions, change in title or tenure, the letter should describe the faculty member’s:
    • Role in the department
    • Potential for growth
    • Extramural funding
  • For  joint appointments:
    • All departments should be specified in the letter
    • Letter should be signed by each departmental chair
    • A copy of each departmental committee report must be submitted with the letter

Referees

List of 5 nationally and internationally known scientists or colleagues in the field external to NYU, from whom the Dean can solicit an evaluation.  Referees should be familiar with the candidate’s research, scholarly work and reputation. Referees who hold university positions should have a title of Associate Professor or Professor.
Include:

  • Academic title
  • Institution
  • Country
  • Email address
  • Telephone number
  • Relationship to referee  

Annual Review Letter

Signed copies of all available annual review letters for research faculty.

Candidate

*Please note that all materials submitted by the candidate will be sent to referees.

Personal Statement

1-2 page statement that describes major academic/scientific achievements and projected research and scholarly endeavors.
*Not required for appointments

Referees

List of 7 nationally and internationally known scientists or colleagues in the field external to NYU, from whom the Dean can solicit an evaluation.  Referees should be familiar with the candidate’s research, scholarly work and reputation. Referees who hold university positions should have a title of Associate Professor or Professor.  Include:

  • Academic title
  • Institution
  • Country
  • Email address
  • Telephone number
  • Relationship to referee
